- To Create a Renovated Cultural Landmark
For my version of the Von Minden Hotel, My design aim is to create a multi-programmatic cultural landmark in Schulenburg that intersected with built blocks to unite the residents, attract young tourists, and with high cohesion. The concept is mainly focusing on how to build a connected system of Trompe l'oeil effect by stencils, grid system, and original building structure, also emphasized how to investigate a more cohesive and flexible space vibe by connecting the 2D view from the 3D, and keep connecting it with 2D Trompe l’oeil elements to get different spatial structures. The relationships between points, lines, and surfaces in my stencil research also let me think of the color palette and materials, which could be a  key element for the following design.
- Trompe L'oeil Culture
In terms of the Schulenberg, its aging society and historical characteristics drove me to create a multi-programmatic cultural landmark intersected by built blocks to unite the residents, attract young tourists, which can be an adaptive reused cultural landmark and a post-pandemic model that embodies diversity and cohesion, which also reflect the native patined church culture and inclusive attitude. My previous research of the painted church is Wesley Brethren, the earliest Bohemian brethren in Texas. The Trompe l’oeil pattern was painted by a local pastor to indicate the immigrants’ unity and cohesion like the chain and the connection between columns and beams. To keep developing that, I was inspired by Lewitt and Michael’s built blocks, and the tenon and mortise joints to combine the blocks and play around them to achieve a transition from 2D to 3D. Capturing the 2D view from 3D, and keep connecting it by 2D Trompe l’oeil elements to get a spatial structure, which can be a key or a module in the following hotel design.
Model Room Proposal
Moved to the model room proposal, the no.52 museum precedents from Esther Stocker inspired me to think of how to apply my stencil in the space with historical elements. And I made those sketches to imaging the possibility of how 2D patterns and 3D structures from stencils could connect, apply on different surfaces, and be furniture, lighting, or another functional object. The massing shows I first define the public, private, and circulation area in white, black, and green, and then Insert the grid system in it to place the 3D objects, and then keep contracting, extending, and adjusting the grids to get the compositions for both 3D Trompe l’oeil and functional. There are sections and plans to show how level 1 and level 2 connect, there is a floating staircase behind the TV wall, and I lower the right second floor, added stairs, connect the shelf and thin columns with floor paint and ceiling paint to create both visual and spatial connection. Those renderings show different moments and experiences when guests move to a certain different perspective. When they move to the bed from the entrance, their view is changing to see how both 2D and 3D Trompe l’oeil communicate with the upper floor, the wall, and the furniture. The small triangle shelves are distorted from the grid systems and also can be seen in different shapes from different views.

- Theater& Lobby Proposal
Moved to the theater concept, I used semi-translucent black curtains for acoustically and visually blurred, also painted the hidden columns on the wall, and a floating stage with a couple of thin columns, also connected with curtain tracks. I want to share my playlist for the theater. Which I also used in the model room video. The experimental and techno music can simulate point-line-surface compositions and a continuous rhythm as my connected system. The theater space is made up of a central pool, stage, and a couple of seatings can be moved by the audience, there is also a changing room hidden behind the curtain layer on the back of the pool. The open to below area and the rest of the second floor consists of an integrated healing space, people can immerse in the performance and music, and enjoy the connected Trompe l’oeil view in the blurred space. A translucent black curtain was used on the stage to achieve the sound effect. Meanwhile, the track of the curtain could be connected with other functional objects. I also painted the column net hidden in the wall on the wall and connected it with the objects, so as to achieve the 3D visual illusion.
- Exterior Shading Elements
In terms of how to connect the interior and exterior and also how to blur the boundary, I designed shadings structures on the top and face to the north. Those distorted structures are attached to the original beams and columns, and when you move from the corner to the entrance, the view of the distortion is changing at the same time. I’m imagining they grew from the building, the semi-translucent fabric, and the curtain wall is blurring the interior and exterior, provide a welcoming and greenery courtyard for residents and tourists.
