- World Economy Conference at Davos
Palantir, as a high-tech company with data science as its primary business, has a prominent increasing influence on the development of the world economy and science. The Palantir's Pavilion at the Davos Conference is designed to eliminate people’s negative impressions of high-tech and data science, such as coldness and insecurity. Using 3D printing technology and the interior landscape to create a natural, organic, warm, and pleasant space for participants. This design started by discussing the privacy of meetings and office spaces. Usually, people will gather in a big public space through the reception area for large-scale socialization, and then they will be dispersed to semi-private or private spaces of interest for talks. So the private space is wrapped around the central public space in this pavilion.
- Site & Programming
The white glass-fiber reinforced concrete form that runs through the first to second floors uses 3D printing technology to simulate the melting process of snow. Waves of different sizes form space and volume from the ceiling to the level. On the one hand, it contrasts with the steep snow mountains and cliffs in the site, giving the experience of warmth and security to people. The soft and fluent shape, on the other hand, reflects the blurring of the boundaries of different indoor areas, creating more ambiguous and shared public spaces and promoting interpersonal communication. At the same time, the wall of a semi-public meeting room near the reception is made of bamboo, with the flexible acoustic fabric covers on it, also providing the sense of ‘more security for people.
- Materials & Lighting
This design started by discussing the privacy of meetings and office spaces. Usually, people will gather in a big public space through the reception area for large-scale socialization, and then they will be dispersed to semi-private or private spaces of interest for talks. So the private space is wrapped around the central public space in this pavilion. Also, my design concept is from the snow mountain at the site, simulating the soft shape of the snow as it melts, in contrast to the steep exterior landscape to give people the experience of warmth and nature. In this perspective, standing beside the staircase provides a good view of the outside landscape. The bamboo, fabric, glass and white plastic shows the different materiality and gives people a sense of a different hierarchy of privacy for them to choose. This perspective represents the contrast between the steep snow mountain and the soft streamline of interior form, the shape has the function of way-finding and blurring the space boundaries at the same time. The interior green area reflects the organic elements of the space and the natural landscape of the site, and at the same time has the effect of improving the interior air quality.
- Form & Details
The interior landscape reflects the integration of the space and the natural landscape of the base, and at the same time has the effect of purifying the air. Green spot with natural characteristics, Pre-case installations with organic concepts and shapes, combined with 3D printing technology, double-glazed glass that can adjust the color according to light, and semi-permanent construction technology, those elements create a new high-tech gallery space. The organic form can be achieved well by large-scale 3D print technology, meanwhile, using bio-based plastic represents the natural and sustainable characteristics, bio-based plastics are made in whole or partially from renewable biological resources which is a good alternative because it is more environmentally friendly than concrete.
